Institute
of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) came into existence in 1975.
It
was then known as Personnel Selection Services (PSS). IBPS is an autonomous academic
and research oriented Institute. IBPS announced a Common Written Examination
(CWE) for recruiting officers and Clerks in Indian banks.
It
is now compulsory for candidates who want to get jobs in 29 public sector and
Regional Rural banks to appear in the common written examination.

Additionally,
applicants to the Specialist cadre are required to have a professional qualification
in Law, Accounting, Agriculture, IT or management sector. A certificate in
computers or knowledge is also made compulsary for posts other than specialist
officers.
